Appreciating Autumn

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite month of the year? Why?

I’m cheating and picking a season.

In accordance with the philosophy of appreciating as many things as I can – each season, each month, has things uniquely beautiful to them. Holidays, too. You just have to tap-in.

Deer Creek in Harford County, Maryland. A stream glowing with yellow, autumn foliage. A bridge in the distance. Used to give the aesthetic of fall.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. You get a week in September to prep for the coming fall months. Then, with the spooky month of October, you get to do fun stuff like carve pumpkins and dress up for Halloween. Finally, (yes, I’m excluding December. It’s more wintery to me.) November, with its cool air and peak colors.

The autumn months have an air about them, I don’t know. It’s wistful and embracing. Even dreary at times – though drear primarily comes in winter.

I tried to pay particular attention to watching the leaves turn this year. As often as I could, once every few days, I’d check in with the trees to see their shades. Slowly, they got to the rich colors we know autumn for.

The temperature also appeals to me – when it’s just cool enough to feel a slight nibble from the wind, but not too cold as to shiver. Feeling the cool air is so stimulating that it reminds me I have a lot to be grateful for.

I’ve had a number of friends and family move away – to California, Florida. While those places are appealing in that it’s probably nice to be somewhere warm and sunny year-round, I can’t help but be grateful to live in a place where I get to experience the beauties and pitfalls of each season.

Honestly, I don’t know if I’d want to be in a place that’s always sunny – I think I’d miss the clouds.

Cheers.
